Wooden House Dwellers

If you hear a rapping, rapping, rapping sound from the walls where someone inefficiently walled up windows and a door (possibly in 1930), and you’ve noticed yellow jackets come to die in your office…..

Depending on your geographic location, it’s probably a woodpecker.

I don’t suppose you know what kind it is…?

Well, I have a suspicion it’s a downy woodpecker. There’s one that’s been visiting the tulip tree nearby. A sample picture is on this site: http://www.dcwild.com/backyard.htm

We also have flickers that nest in an old mulberry tree near here, but I haven’t seen them recently. And, honestly, they’re huge. I would have seen one of them flying away from the house when I looked out.
