4th of July

There have been fireworks, including some fountain types set off by acquaintances in the street. Lovely corn on the cob at dinner, followed by a tart, juicy plum. And most wonderful of all — after downed power lines on Friday and no power in much of the city, light has returned to the corner of Church and Graveyard.

Hope you all have a wonderful Independence Day. I’ve been compiling a list of books that capture bits of the USA:

Ben and Me, by Robert Lawson (Yes, it is a children’s book)

Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston

The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald (there are a lot of Jay Gatsbys around these days)

Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger

The Magnificent Ambersons, by Booth Tarkington

John Brown’s Body, by Stephen Vincent Benet

I’m sure you can think of others. Cheers!
